over-exited fan on G5 2.7 dual

over-exited fan on G5 2.7 dual

Ask :
It's not often easy to clean these G5 Beasts, but have you access to a high pressure air compressor? I use 100PSI to clean most areas.

I've often wondered if the amount of RAM sticks affected the Memory Controller temp much, I have all but 2 slots filled with 10GB, my temps stay about 57°C, I think the 66-67°C on yours is going to aggravate the lead-free solder issue around the slots & controller.
Answer :
I have a 2.7. and had the same problem with noisy fans. There are lots of 'fixes', none of which worked for me. Removing the LCS can be a bit daunting but is not too hard. I changed the thermal paste and the unit had no leaks, I did not change the coolant but will do that next time.

To stop the racket I removed the two front input fans and replaced them with ultra quiet after market fans. I wired them a PC fan controler card which powers and regulates the noise/speed of the fans. I am about to do the same with the rear fans, this stops the 'ramping' of the fans. There are reports of 'ramping' G5 fans as far back as 2005, my thoughts are that the sensors which control the fans are too sensitive and even when users have had new logic boards, the problem often returns.

Bottom line, the early attempts at liquid cooling and fan control where not really very good, but as my mac only cost about 120 dollars I don't mind chopping it up and adding PC fans and to be honest it's a fun project to try to get all the Apple fans out and high quality silent fans in. Hope this was helpfull in some way.

How to retrieve old nickname in Game center?

How to retrieve old nickname in Game center?

Ask :
Aprox a year ago I registered nickname iBolit.
At that time I've had iPhone 3G.
Now I somehow can't login with the same nickname from my new iPhone 4G...
Thing is that I'm using the same Apple ID....
I have been using game center for at least six months (most likely longer) and enjoying their games. However this evening I went to play one of my game center games Eternal Warriors a game by GLU and it asked me to accept the game center terms of service. This seemed routine to me so I accepted. Then it booted my Busta80 game center ID and replaced it with one that my wife had set up over a year ago. Now when I try and get my old ID linked back to my apple ID it tells me that that nickname is already in use. Someone help!
Anyone knows something about this subject?
Answer :
This also had me in a panic but this is what worked for me.

When Game Center was launched, it was trying to log me in by default with my email address whatever@whatever.com, but I had to change this to my Apple ID which is just a string of text, and then I put in my password for my Apple ID.

If you do not know your Apple ID, search your inbox for "Apple" and hopefully the email from the past is in there somewhere.

You can also try and find your Apple ID on this Apple Webpage:-

https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa

Also, earlier, ! had to change my Apple ID password because it was not secure enough by default and it was not letting me log in, so I went from the link in my email to the apple password change page and I changed the password to make the new security happy.

Game Center then logged me in first time and didn't have to put in a nickname or anything - yay

Hope this helps someone - I would have cried to have to redo all those **** achievements!!

Regards,

Game Center deleted my account, all progress lost

Game Center deleted my account, all progress lost
Ask :
When I updated my iPhone to iOS 5. Whilst it was doing it I tried playing RR2HD on my iPad as usual. It welcomed me as a Rookie!!

Tried relogging into my Game Center account and it says it's never been used for game center before! So I lost all my game progress and multiplayer ranking! It also effects other games, as my account seems to have been reset at Apple.

Spoke to Apple MobileMe support, as it was a MobileMe account I started converting to iCloud but got scared off by all the warnings, but they say they don't support apps on the devices. No help there then!

I am using the same Game Center AppleID, yet it seems like I am a new person to my games. How do I get it to reconnect with my old profile and restore all my progress?
Answer :
For some reason, when I upgraded my iPhone, my iPad signed in as my current iTunes Store ID. I had been using a different gash Apple ID (this one in fact for apple discussions since 2005) for Game Centre on my iPad.

So others who may have lost progress, check the actual account you are using and try other Apple IDs in Game Centre. Hope this helps.

Switch Apple IDs in Game Centre

Switch Apple IDs in Game Centre

Ask :
Is it possible to switch Apple IDs in Game Centre? I made this fake Apple ID when I first got my iPhone (just in case anything happened in the first couple months) and I played a few games, got a few achievements etc etc. But now I made an actual Apple ID with correct information and stuff and I want to change the fake Apple ID currently in my Game Centre account with the real one I just made. Problem comes up when I type in my actual ID to switch. It says 'The Apple ID you have entered is already in use'. Please help, I dont know why thats coming up.

Answer :
Well, you should have ensured that you were using the one you intended to use with Game Center. Scores, achievements, and friends are not tracked across multiple Apple IDs, nor can you merge Apple ID's(Apple is working on allowing this, but currently you can't). All you can do is change the account you are signed into.
In game center, there is a banner showing your email. Touch that and you will see, view and sign out. Touch sign out.

But as wjosten says, you can't merge the accounts together and the ownership of the games will belong to the old account.

How To Get Siri to automatically read my text messages

How can I get Siri to automatically read my text messages to me as I recieve them?

Ask :

In the Introducing Siri video, there was a bit here a blind woman got an SMS and Siri read it to her straight away, without even needing to ask Siri to do so. How do I enable that feature? I looked in the Accessability section, and couldnt see it. Am I missing something?
Answer :

you have to turn on Voice Over and Speaks Notification under Setting. Then it will say "you have a text from whoever". Siri doesn't notify you when you get a message unless you ask. I watched the commerical. The voice " you got a message from Sandy Chen" is Voice Over not Siri's voice.
Why in the world would you want that? That's just trouble waiting to happen. LOL. Your standing in your bosses office when a text from a buddy gets blurted out loud! Your at dinner with your girlfriend and Siri starts reading a text from another girl! I see a lot of awkward moments in your future if you do get it turned on.

How to get siri to READ text messages out loud

Does any one know EXACTLY how to get siri to READ text messages out loud ?

Ask :
While the text is still unread, ask Siri "read my new text message". If it understand but for some reason doesn't read the content, then you have to reset Siri. Siri is not perfect yet. It is still a "beta"
How do I get siri to READ my text messages ? What do I "say " to siri ?
Answer :
Turn iPhone completely of. Once off. Hold down the home button and the on/off button for 10 second. Then let go. :) reset complete.
You need to have Settings->Notifications->Messages->Show Preview set to ON or it will not read the message unless the phone is unlocked.

Just reading through this post and the best way to Reset SIRI is to go to Settings>General>Siri and then turn SIRI off. This erase's anything SIRI has learn't about you, all you have to do then is turn SIRI back on and it is reset. It is not necessary to reset the iPhone itself.

SIRI can only read back unread Txt messages, if you have opened a Txt message and already read it you can not have SIRI read it back to you. Don't forget SIRI is still in BETA and will take a little while while Apple tweek this technology.

My Siri is not working when VoiceOver is on

My Siri is not working when VoiceOver is on

Ask :

My Siri is not working when VoiceOver is on- can anyone help?
Answer :

They should both work at the same time but there appears to be a glitch as it works unevenly. Also, Siri doesn't work quite the same way when Voice Over is turned on. It seems that to input information to Siri with Voice Over switched on, you have to activiate Siri's microphone icon (first tapping once to identify the button, then twice to activate it) rather than just speaking to Siri automatically.

I would keep trying with it as it took me a few goes to get it to work properly. Make sure that both Siri and Voice Over are switched on in General Settings, and when you do so, make sure you back all the way out to the Settings front page before hitting the Home button. I had a hard time with it when I just went through these steps:

Settings > General Settings > Siri > Siri On > Home

But it worked okay when I went through these:

Settings > General Settings > Siri > Siri On > General > Settings > Home

(Or the same with turning on Voice Over).

I'm unlikely to use Voice Over myself, but my mother is visually impaired and I'm thinking of getting her an iPhone 4S for Christmas - only if I can get Siri and Voice Over to work together, though.

Seems like ever since I updated to 5.0.1, Siri is not coming up when prompted or vice versa. Also, seem to be getting crappy coverage all of the sudden. Anyone else experiencing this?
Answer :
I just updated my iPhone 4s to 5.0.1 and it seems like I'm having same issue too. My Siri is lagging on me ... I'm not sure bcuz of apple connection or bcuz of the update.

Perform a hard reset... press the power button and the home key at the same time for ten seconds..

Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else

Sim Card Failure No Sim with iPhone 4S Anyone Else

Ask :
If it's the microSIM issue then why did my problems go away when I did the update and used the same microSIM?
Or why is the same microSIM in question working just fine on my wife's iPhone 4?
So next time before you start commenting please check your facts.
4S is the issue and as we can see in some cases it takes a new SIM and in others it works with the update.
In my opinion, the problem is also related to hardware.
Probably one sub model (P/n: MD234C/A Model A1387) in Apple's defective.
The fact that some iPhones have not encountered a problem and some did. And those that replaced the iPhone, did not have a problem anymore.
Answer :

PROBLEM FIXED! (Iphone 4S, 16GB, last version of IOS 5.0.1, Vodafone IT, micro sim (not cutted))
The sim-error problem started wiht IOS 5.0.1. I've changed 4 SIMs and restored the iPhone more than 10 times, also with the last version of IOS 5.0.1 (9....6) Error appared 5-10 times a day.I was loosing hope when I read Stephan's post... I've followed his procedure :

1. Plug in to iTunes and back up.
2. Hold down the power (top) button and the home (bottom) button together for approx 8 seconds.
3. Release the TOP BUTTON ONLY after 8 seconds. As iTunes begins to restore the phone you can release the bottom button.
4. The phone will go back to the factory settings. You can then restore from your save back up.

Now everything works!!! 50hrs and no sim error!!!

My understanding is that there are many, many things that can cause the messages "NO SIM," "SIM FAILURE," "INVALID SIM," etc. That is why this issue is probably such a difficult one to fix. Let's hope Apple gives us a holiday present soon with a REAL fix for this issue.

iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

iPhone 4S 5.0.1 Update Improves Battery w/ Settings Reset

Ask :
Follow Davisch's post exactly. It does not use iTunes restore feature. Its all done directly on the iPhone itself. Also do not use the "erase all content" option that WILL delete all your data. And you do not want to restore you settings from the backup as the current backup is a backup of your device with the problem. So effectivley it will restore the items you are attempting to get rid of. Since this procedure does not impact your data/apps etc there is no need to restore it anyway. Certainly you still want a backup just in case but after the process is completed and all is well, THEN backup again with the "fixed" version and you will be good to go and have a good backup of the phone in a working state. Luck to ya! Hope it helps.
I'm still not sure I have seen any difference. 5min of Internet 5min on Facebook and about 20 text messages and there I've lost a lot of my battery. Usage is showing 1hr 27min and 13 hrs 24 min on standby with battery at 60%. I removed the phone from the charger at 5am and around 930 turned it on for the first time. It had been in my pocket asleep during that time. Usage showed 30 min which leads me to believe there is some phantom programs running or something not sure

Answer :

Here is my usage:
-usage: 5 hours, 24 minutes (phone calls 17 minutes, gaming, social networking, email)
-standby: 13 hours, 11 minutes
-remaining battery: 8%
-it manages to stay alive till i got home

Location service On (system services OFF), Fetch MANUALLY email, Siri ON (Raise to speak OFF)
I have tons of questions I hope you have time to enlighten me about them, most of them make sense and they matterwith regards to the overall experience of the phone especially battery usage, here goes:

In Standby or using the phone: does leaving more apps in themultitasking bar burn more battery than leaving none open?
Or no difference? Even if there's no wi-fi andthe phone's locked but should iteven matter considering that the phone is on sleep mode?
Also Does the number of unclosed apps, enabled wifi, affect the battery drain even on standby? Or it should not?

Is locking the home screen same as pushing the sleep/wakebutton wherein the phone should go into sleep?

As a best way of charging the battery, should I turn it offevery time I charge - or ON is OK?
Related question is it best practiceto charge the phone even if it’s not depleted yet or still more than 20%? Or itdoesn’t matter since it’s a Li-Ion battery?

Withregards to this procedure to save my battery life:

Will this work for my iPhonewhich is Ios5 5.0.1 out of the box?
When recharging back to 100%,do I need to turn it off until its 100% (Oh come to think of it how would Iknow it’s 100% already -_-)

AnywayI’ll be trying this procedure when I can then I’ll update you definitely.

Here’smy current situation:

In standby mode my iphoneburns 2-3%. NO wifi, JUST 3 apps in the MT bar whatsoever, no date usagewhatsoever because 3G is disabled
Ithought initially that this was normal but reading this thread I found thatit’s not supposed to be that way.
As formy usage statistics – are these acceptable numbers? It charged to 100% 12 AMSGT yesterday Monday, Dec 5, 2011. Now at 17:32 PM SGT, Dec 6 it’s 25%, itsays:
The Usage is 6 hrs and 4minutes (plus some minutes while still writing this reply)
Standby is 1 day and 17 hours
Even if these were kinda acceptable compared to other Usage Statistics in this thread,I didn’t feel I really used the phone that much most of the time I’m working :/PLUS the 2-3% standby battery drain should not be that way right…
Overnight, with wi-fi setting to ON (but my router is dead), with 12-13 apps in the multitasking bar, from57% it went to 48% after 9 hours L It shouldn’t be draining that much at standby even if there are lot of open apps, right?

Very sorry for the number of questions, I don’t hope to get a response any timesoon.

Wi-Fi stopped working.

Wi-Fi stopped working.

Ask :

I have an iPhone 4 with the latest iOS installed (5.0.1). The update was installed a few weeks ago, when it came out.
I am having problems connectiong to Wi-Fi networks. It was working perfectly until earlier today when i got back home from the gym. It just doesn't want to connect to a Wi-FI network. It was working last night and this morning.
I restarted the router, even though my laptop is using the network with no problems wirelessly. I tried with another router as well.
I tried to renew lease, reset network settings, turn the device off and on again, but none of that helped.
Is there any way of fixing this ?

Answer :

You have already done most of the common diagnostic steps. If the problem occurs with multiple routers and you have reset network settings on the phone you have just about run out of options. It's possible you have a failed WiFi/BlueTooth chip. Does BlueTooth work?

You can try Reset All Settings, as you didn't mention it.

BTW, restarting the router matters even if other devices can connect to it. The common router failure is the DHCP daemon that assigns IP addresses. Your phone requests an address every time it connects. Your laptop is presumably on for long periods of time, so failure of the router to assign an IP address doesn't matter because it already has one.

Wi-Fi issues after iOS 5.0.1 update on iPad.

Wi-Fi issues after iOS 5.0.1 update on iPad.

Ask :
After updating to 5.0.1 I can't access the internet through my home wifi. It worked right up until the update, now it shows as connected to wifi but it won't access any online services. I can connect only through my iPhone acting as an hotspot. Any Ideas on what to do? Is anyone else having this issue?
Answer :
Restart your WiFi router by removing power to it for 30 seconds.

On your iPhone go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings.

Now try to connect.

While wifi connection is never good on ipad according to my experiecne, the situation is worsend after ios 5.0.1. It takes approximatley 2 to 3 minutes for me to connect to the home router, (it took 30 secs at most in the past). When I go out for outdoor wifi, the hotspots of some internet service providers can never be connected, the refreshing circles keeping spinning for 3 to 5 minutes and nothing happen.

The bottom line is, battery life seems to run longer than before, but I don't think it is an acceptable trade-off.

Installed iOS 5.0.1 now WiFi won't connect

Ask :
My 6 month old iPhone 4 has been having problems locating my home WiFi for the past few days.
It locates every other WiFi network outside of my house, but inside it can only find my neighbours, and with lower signal strength than usual.
At my school it has no problems finding and connecting to the free WiFi there.
My family's iPad's and our macbook pro's have no trouble connecting to the WiFi so it is probably not a problem with the router.
I've tried everything, I've turned WiFi on and off, reset network settings, reset the phone itself, all with no success.

Please help me guys, I need WiFi!
Answer :
I too am having the same issue with iOS5.0.1. I've not tried tweaking the router, but why should I have to? iPhone WiFi worked before the update and now it can't find the network intermittently. My gut tells me in trying to address the battery issue, they are limiting power to the WiFi chip and that's interferring with the phone being able to "see" available networks. In my case, I can be right on top of the router and I only get the spinning dial. I also get multiple lock-ups that require a hard reboot. Last night I had to do 3 reboots in an hour.

I tried all the reccomended solutions including seting the iphone to use a static ip address and dns etc... no change. BUT, Tonight I kept trying different settings on the router and found that by changing the 2.4ghz radio from n+g, to g only, then back to n+g somehow fixed the problem (at least so far). So it seems to be some kind of compatibility problem when using the n+g mixed mode on the AP. Keep in mind that all my ohter wifi devices continued to connect just fine before I toggled the router settings. In my case, the router is a Cisco/Linksys wrt600n router running DD-WRT firmware v24-sp2 (08/07/10) mega (SVN revision 14896)...

How do I turn off 3G on the iPhone 4S?

How do I turn off 3G on the iPhone 4S?
Ask :
That is simply an incorrect generalization that ALL other GSM phones offer menu driven features for all aspects of call forwarding. Also call forwarding and all its' features and aspects are carrier dependent, meaning not all features and aspects may not be available with that GSM carrier.

Your original comment on call forwarding was that iOS didn't have a menu setting for call forwarding. It does.
Answer :
I always said that iPhone offers only the most basic call forwarding while even the entry level GSM phones have settings for advanced level call forwarding. If a particular type of call forwarding is not available from a carrier, it would be greyed out in these phones. Though I obviously cannot speak for each and every GSM phone released till date, I haven't seen these features missing in any GSM phone and I have seen some in last 15 years.

Coming back to the main point, this is but one of the numerous examples how Apple can choose not to offer an easily implementable feature. I believe that the software/hardware toggle issue can only be settled by Apple and they are not going to come out with a statement (typically) unless the situation snowballs to another antenna-gate.

Going through other forums on the toggle issue, I found that this problem is present even in some of the prime areas of US and Europe. I believe that more than 50% of the users all over the world are going to face difficulties on their iphone 4S if they keep 3G activated from the carrier.

It is a matter of creating awareness on this issue.

The call forwarding features aren't missing. They are available via standard "GSM Feature Codes", though not all features will be available on all carriers. Apple isn't restricting the iPhone from any of these call forwarding features, your carrier might, but not Apple.

You are not reading my post properly and trying to defend the indefensible. I have never said these features cannot be activated through carrier codes.

I have said that Apple provides for the most basic part of call forwarding. For conditional call forwarding, one has to use carrier codes. But that is so inconvinient that hardly any one would take that route. Even if you download a app for this purpose, the experience caanot be compared to the built in features of other phones.

Apple, like all other GSM phone manfucaturers, should have provided these options in the settings menu.
